What is it?

The Derby Marketing Challenge invites businesses, charities and community organisations to challenge our Marketing students to address a strategic issue or marketing problem and to suggest possible solutions.  It aims to provide ‘blue-sky’ thinking designed to improve the business’s performance, whilst equipping students with key and demonstrable consulting and teamwork skills.

Where will the challenge take place?

The challenge will take place at the University’s Kedleston Road site in Derby. Successful companies will be required to attend at the beginning of the day to answer any questions regarding the organisation and the brief, and be present when the student team presents their ideas and solutions at around 4 pm on the same day.

How does the challenge work?

Organisations submit a company and a project brief, outlining their particular issue or opportunity. This will be assessed to ensure that yours is a suitable challenge.  We will divide students into teams and assign them to the client organisation, based on your project requirements and their particular skills. Students will be working on your project throughout the day and present their findings, suggestions or solutions to you at the end of the day. Following the presentation, each organisation will be invited to provide feedback to ‘their’ team and score their performance on a number of criteria.

After the event there will be an opportunity for you to discuss with us how we can continue to work with you to help you progress any outcomes that you would like to take forward in the business.

How to take part?

In order to take part, you will need you to register your interest and complete the form below. We will need to receive your brief by the end of December to give us time to assess applications and match your brief with a suitable student team.

As the number of application may out-strip the number of teams, they will be allocated on a competitive basis based on suitability.

If you are successful then a member of the team will be in contact with you in January to get some extra information from you to ensure the student teams have a full brief and agree your desired outcomes / deliverables.

If you are not successful in your challenge application then a member of our team will contact you to discuss alternative ways our students or staff can support your proposed project – the Marketing Challenge is one of a number of ways you can engage with us so we can normally find an alternative way to support your needs.

Past projects undertaken by our students

Past projects involved marketing and promotion ideas, website design, evaluating fundraising initiatives and researching customers. Our students have worked with a wide range of organisations, providing fresh, new thinking to start-ups and existing organisations from a wide range of sectors, including museums and heritage centres, health, manufacturing, local government, community projects and many more.
