What is the Athena SWAN Charter?

The Equality Challenge Unit's Athena SWAN Charter recognises advancement of gender equality in Higher Education institutes. The University signed up to be a member of the Athena SWAN Charter in March 2014. The Charter has ten key principles which encourage advancement of careers of women (and men where appropriate) for:

The Charter was launched in June 2005 and is a scheme which recognises excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM) employment in Higher Education. Any university or research institution which is committed to the advancement and promotion of the careers of women in STEMM in Higher Education and research can apply for membership.

Why is the University of Derby a member?

We are pleased to be members as the Athena SWAN Charter fits well with the University's values and we believe it will provide us with a useful tool to benchmark our progress, enabling female academics to fulfil their potential and act as role models across the University and externally. Here at the University of Derby, our mission is to Inspire, Innovate and Impact, ensuring that our learners have a 'best in class' student experience. Our membership of Athena SWAN is important to us. It helps us to drive forward activities across our University that help us deliver our five core values detailed in the Corporate Plan (including quality, valuing people, customer focus, challenge and innovation, and opportunity and openness), and to secure recognition for this. We want to ensure that all our staff are supported and encouraged, and that we recognise and celebrate their achievements. We want to benefit from the talent of all.

Our academics are at the heart of our research practice. The University is committed to supporting the career development of our STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Medicine) researchers and to encourage more females to study STEMM subjects. We run  many initiatives such as our STEMpunk activities, Women in Engineering days in schools and at the University, work with Young Engineers, and support for STEMNET ambassadors.
