Dr Mark Faghy, Senior lecturer in Exercise Physiology

When I started my undergraduate degree at Derby back in 2008 my goal was to become an international football manager but then I was introduced to sport science and exercise physiology and it changed everything.

[Mark in a lab with an assistant and a man attached to a breathing mask working hard on a cycling machine.]

[Mark, wearing blue medical gloves, makes notes as he walks beside a subject.]

[Mark in animated discussion in a lounge area.]

Now having worked with athletes and teams at the highest level and achieving my PhD I am proud to work at the University of Derby in a role that I am truly passionate about as a respected academic. Over the past few years I've been using my training as an exercise scientist to help people in new ways, taking my research and human performance to improve recovery and quality of life through the COVID-19 pandemic.

[Mark takes a pinprick blood sample from a subject.]

Some of the people that we've supported will never be able to run marathons but we might be able to improve what they can do within their daily life.

[Mark sits at a desk with laptop in front of him, talking with a colleague.]

Knowing that I am making an impact is what drives me every day.

[A patient lies in a hospital bed while a nurse adjusts their monitoring equipment.]

When we look at the health situation with the pandemic and the global issues related to health they can all be influenced in some way from the disciplines of sport science and I'm privileged to be teaching these disciplines to the next generation of scientists.
