For new students, sustainability is included within the Welcome booklet and the virtual induction provided in September each year.

On-campus student growing space

Roots is an on-campus student outdoor study space and biodiversity area designed to give staff and students new opportunities to engage with gardening. The project is accessible and open to all and aims to provide opportunities to get outdoors and improve physical and mental health.

Roots is a partnership project on University-owned land, involving Student Wellbeing, the Chaplaincy, and the Union of Students. Contact suzy.stevenson@derbyunion.co.uk for more information.

Go Green Week

This year the University held Go Green Week in February 2021. Although this was virtual, we still held several activities including debates, presentations and top tips for becoming more sustainable. If you would like to get involved with next year's Go Green Week please contact environment@derby.ac.uk

#DerbyGoesGreen Project

The University is very excited to be launching a new ongoing project to be led by students. If you are a student with a passion for sustainability and would like to have an impact on the University's environment and sustainability agenda, please let us know via our expression of interest form.

Make a positive impact on the local community and the environment

As part of our Student Experience Framework, the Make a Change Fund is a community initiative where students and staff can bid for up to £1,000 to support existing or new community projects.

Make a Change provides a fantastic opportunity for students to engage in their community and it also aids the learning of new skills such as project management and networking.

Students must lead or have significant involvement in the project and they should be within the University’s community or surrounding area.

There is no deadline for submissions, but we recommend applying early to avoid disappointment. Visit UDo for more information and to apply.

Community Fund

The University of Derby runs a community fund, which provides one-off grants to projects that bring social or environmental benefit to local people.
