How to get involved

If you have any idea or suggestions or wish to report something please use our environmental suggestion box.

Student and staff engagement

All new staff have an Environmental Awareness induction and a new training programme for managers focusing on the environment and sustainability in their role is currently being developed.

Students and staff can also participate in the Union of Students Green Committee and the University's Environmental Steering Group.

In September 2016, we ran our second annual Nature Connections Festival. The Festival provided a forum for sharing and learning from the latest research and practice in nature connection and also helped people to develop a common understanding of the role of nature connection, for example in well-being and pro-environmental behaviour.

On-campus student growing space

Roots is an on-campus student outdoor study space and biodiversity area designed to give staff and students new opportunities to engage with gardening. The project is accessible and open to all, and aims to provide opportunities to get outdoors and improve physical and mental health.

Roots is a partnership project on University-owned land, involving Student Wellbeing, the Chaplaincy and the Union of Students. Contact suzy.stevenson@derbyunion.co.uk for more information.

Make a positive impact to the local community and the environment

As part of our Student Experience Framework, the Make a Change Fund is a community initiative where students and staff can bid for up to £1,000 to support existing or new community projects.

Make a Change provides a fantastic opportunity for students to engage in their community and it also aids the learning of new skills such as project management and networking.

Students must lead or have significant involvement in the project and they should be within the University’s community or surrounding area.

There is no deadline for submissions, but we recommend applying early to avoid disappointment. Visit UDo for more information and to apply.
