Team Derby is the sporting identity for the University of Derby. We are committed to improving the performance of the University’s sports clubs. We run a sector-leading performance programme for Badminton, Basketball, Volleyball, Football and Cycling. This programme has been developed to attract and retain our student athletes.

Our performance programmes

Badminton has been a performance sport for Team Derby for a number of years, resulting in the University club going continually from strength to strength. The first team programme has developed to an elite level with high-performance coaching and class-leading support services that provides our student athletes with a fantastic opportunity to train daily and develop as an individual and as a team player.

Team Derby was also a founding member of the National Badminton League, are two-time finalists and were inaugural Champions (2014/15). Following this brilliant success, the badminton programme continues to attract some of England’s most-talented junior players.

Both the Women’s and Men’s first teams compete at a high level in BUCS both in team and individual competitions. 2018 was our most successful year to date with the men’s team securing promotion into the premier division and the women’s team into division one.

James Boxall - Head Coach

James joined Team Derby as Head Coach in 2015. He is also Head Coach at Derbyshire Performance Centre and Derbyshire Institute of Sport and is GB Para-badminton assistant coach and is currently working with many young England programme players. He is a former junior National Champion, junior European medallist and England senior squad player. James has also travelled with senior England players to top international events, worked as national junior coach for eight years and he has worked at alongside GB coaches at the National Centre in Milton Keynes.

Our men's Basketball programme provides a fantastic environment for elite and developing players. Players have the opportunity to compete at a high level in BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) and are coached by ex-professionals.

The first team programme is bold and ambitious, with a strong performance team culture. Team Derby is striving to continually improve the programme and individual athletes each year. 2019/2020 was a successful year with the team finishing in first position in Division 1A

The City of Derby has two successful national league programmes, Derbyshire Spartans and Derby Trailblazers and many of the athletes have competed for the University and at a national league level whilst studying. 

Phil Waghorn - Head Coach

Phil has over 36 years of experience through playing, coaching and administering the sport from development to a high-performance level. As a coach Phil has won numerous NBL league titles, promotions and cup wins. Basketball has taken Phil around the world, additionally, he has worked with GB's best as the assistant team manager of Team GB at the 2012 Olympics.

Cycling was Team Derby’s most successful performance sport in 2017/2018 season and we were ranked the No.1 University for track cycling. With a velodrome in the city and easy access to the Peak District, this is a fantastic environment for riders to develop in all disciplines.

Derby Arena is the Midlands hub for track cycling and our elite team of track riders access weekly sessions at the velodrome. With the additional support services package available, our programme is a fantastic opportunity for track cyclists to study and develop as athletes.

For the second season running, our performance cycling team have won overall mens team gold in the British University and College Sports (BUCS) Track Championships. Other recent successes:

  • BUCS team pursuit record, smashing the previous by 11 seconds in a time of 4 minutes 11.640 seconds 2017
  • BUCS individual pursuit record of 4 minutes 17.217 seconds 2017
  • BUCS 2018 on the track: gold in the individual pursuit and elimination, silver medallist in the team pursuit, bronze medallist in the kilo event. 
  • BUCS 2017 on the track: gold and bronze medallists in the individual pursuit, gold in the team pursuit, gold in the kilometre time trial, gold and silver in the elimination, bronze in the team sprint, silver in the points race and gold in the overall team event
  • BUCS 2016 on the track: bronze in the individual pursuit, silver in the team pursuit, gold in the elimination and bronze in the overall team event
  • BUCS 2016 on the road: bronze in the 25-mile TT
  • October 2019 Corinne Side wins BUCS Hill Climb gold medal
  • October 2020 UoD Student Daniel Slack wins World Junior Silver medal whilst representing GB: Downhill Mountain Bike 

Phil Kilpatrick - Head Coach

Phil has experience as a successful cyclist himself and coached the HUUB Wattbike team to World cup success, he has coached numerous riders to Masters success both at a national and international level. Phil has successfully coached university athletes since 2015 and understands the challenges of being a dual career athlete. Additionally, Phil runs his own coaching business and has supported riders from a number of disciplines to national success.

The Men’s and Women’s Volleyball programme provides a fantastic environment for new and experienced players to compete and train. Players have the opportunity to compete at a high level in BUCS and are coached by an ex-professional player. The coaching team are striving to keep improving with the ambition to compete in the University premier league in the next few years. 

The National Volleyball League

Darkstar is Derby’s National league team, the club consists of men’s and women’s teams and is coached by an all-star coaching team of Audrey Cooper (Olympian and Head Coach of the London 2012 GB Volleyball team and Maria Bertelli (2012 Olympian and current England Coach). The link to the National League side provides the University players with further opportunities to compete at a senior level and further weekly training opportunities.

Viktoriya Glazewska - Women's Head Coach

With 20 years of playing experience, Viktoriya has now turned her attention to coaching. She was a member of the national team of Belarus, has competed in the European Championships and played six years in the Russian League.

She says: “Volleyball is my life and I started my coaching career because I want to pass my volleyball knowledge and experience to the next generations. I am excited for this new challenge with Team Derby.”

Men's Football is new to the Performance programme this year and provides experienced players with a fantastic opportunity to train and compete.

Our first team squad compete in BUCS Division 1 and are coached by ex-professional player John McGrath. Under John's guidance the team have improved their standings over the last 3 seasons, narrowly missing promotion to the BUCS Premier League in 2019.

Head Coach

John McGrath is Player Manager at Mickleover Sports FC and has been coaching the University's First Team squad since 2016. John has had an extensive career as both player and coach. He played for a number of clubs including Aston Villa and Doncaster Rovers, and won five Republic of Ireland Under 21s Caps.

The University of Derby's partnership with Mickleover Sports FC provides student players with the opportunity to trial and compete at a semi-professional level for the club in the Northern Premier League Premier Division.
