Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme

The Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) is a government initiative funded by Sport England. It supports talented young athletes who wish to progress with education and sport simultaneously.

In order to be considered for a TASS award, athletes must be competing at national or international level and successfully nominated by their sport’s National Governing Body (NGB). The scheme is not available to international students.

As a new TASS delivery site, we are excited to be recognised for our support of talented athletes and proud that many of our sports scholars have gone on to represent Team GB.

  • Open water swimmer Jack Burnell (BA Business Management) competed at the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016
  • Cyclist Charlie Tanfield (BEng Mechanical Engineering) won Team Pursuit Silver and Individual Pursuit Gold medals at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018 and Team Pursuit Gold at the UCI Track World Championships in 2018
  • Canoeist Chelsea Dixon (BSc Biology) represented Great Britain at the World Paracanoe Championships 2018

TASS provides athletes with:

  • a tailored package of services including strength and conditioning, lifestyle support and physiotherapy
  • access to sports nutrition and sports psychology support
  • an expenses allowance up to £500 dependant on the level or award

Visit the TASS website for details.

Dual Career Accreditation

The University is also proud to be a TASS Dual Career Accredited site.

TASS Dual Career Accreditation acknowledges our commitment to dual career support for talented athletes. It recognises that we provide an enhanced level of academic flexibility and understanding in order to help our talented athletes balance their university studies with a busy sporting schedule.

Our TASS lead is Rhondell Stabana. You can contact him at R.Stabana@derby.ac.uk.
