Jack Burnell, HND Business and Management
Jack is a UK Top 15 10k and gold medal winning open water swimmer who is currently studying our CMI accredited HND Business and Management part time.
Choosing business at Derby
I chose to study my part time HND at the University of Derby so that I could have the flexibility to fit my work around my training. Many other universities do not offer such a flexible study method so this really appealed to me.
I’m also a Team Derby sports scholarship athlete and access support from the performance sport programme as well as discounted tuition fees. I enjoy representing the University of Derby at the annual British Universities and Colleges swimming competition and I have won several medals at this event in previous years.
A supportive environment
The staff at the university have been very supportive and accommodating, offering me a flexible study experience. There have been times that I’ve been away training and they’ve helped me achieve both my study and athletic goals.
The sports facilities at the university are great and I often use them between my lectures to help with my training.
Combining my sport with my studies
My studies are helping me achieve my career goals by offering me an alternative to my sport. I can focus my mind on something away from swimming which gives me the tools I need to help in my life after my sporting career.
My current main focus is training for this year’s World Championships in Russia and hoping that my efforts will see me qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Starting my own sports business
I started my own sports clothing business, Novus Athletic, with two friends as I was commencing my HND at Derby. I am proud to be the managing director of a successful company that produces kit for various sporting clubs and teams - most recently for the British Gas Swim Britain event.
I have particularly enjoyed studying marketing as part of my course and find it really interesting. It’s great that the content of my HND has really helped in my business, especially the marketing.
I would recommend for anyone to do a degree at Derby because they have great facilities and very supportive staff that will help you to achieve.
