“I am very pleased to win the award as it is a recognition of the hard work I put into all three years on the course. If you are seeking a well recognised degree within a friendly environment then I would definitely recommend the University of Derby”
– Heather Anderson
Heather Anderson studied BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance. In 2009 she won The NDLSCA for Best Stage Two Accounting Student, and in 2010 won The Bates Weston award for for Best BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance student.
A new career path
I was about to be made redundant from my sales post with a finance company and decided it was time to go after a job I could really enjoy.
I had done an Accountancy A-level in 2000 and enjoyed that but it was the only A-level I had. I spoke to the tutors at the University of Derby, who were great, and I managed to get onto a degree course. It was a bit daunting going back into education after such a long period of time
Why I chose accounting and finance
I wanted to retrain in accountancy and felt the course would give me the necessary grounding to move into my chosed field. I found the modules both interesting and varied to give a rounded understanding of business whilst still having a core focus within finance. I enjoyed the management accounts and financial strategy modules as they included techniques which are widely used in the business environment.
Bringing Learning to life
I am currently on the West Midlands NHS Graduate Finance Scheme. This is a three year scheme which involves gaining insight into all aspects of finance within the NHS. I am working within a Primary Care Trust as an Assistant Corporate Accountant. The course has given a fantastic grounding in understanding finances which has helped me to learn within the work environment more rapidly. I have been able to utilise financial techniques learnt on the course within my current role.
The tutors are extremely supportive and approachable and willing to listen and act on student feedback.
"Heather has shown there can be alternative routes for students with previous work experience, rather than purely the traditional A-level one. People can forge a new career for themselves by choosing an appropriate academic route into employment. I wish her every success in her future career in finance"
Darren Byrne, Accounting and Finance programme leader.
