Adam Hood - Undergraduate - University of Derby

 Adam Hood Profile

Going on placement is likely to put you “far ahead” of other graduates when it comes to finding a job after university. That’s the opinion of BA (Hons) Business Management student Adam Hood, who secured a rewarding placement as a Business Support Specialist in Global Technology Services with IBM.

Adam says: “It’s not easy going from university life to a full-time job, but I proved that I am able to adapt to this working lifestyle and it does give me an excellent insight into what life after university is going to be like. I would highly recommend a placement year. As well as being paid for your time, which helps with your financial situation in the final year of your studies, the experience and opportunities you gain are well worth it.”

Although based at IBM’s Warwick site, Adam has travelled extensively during his placement, which has given him a real appreciation of the modern-day requirements of a project management role.

He has been involved in a range of process improvement projects – including one for contractor onboarding which is set to save his department £1.5m in lost productivity. The process is now being rolled out worldwide by IBM.

Adam praised Derby Business School for being “exceptionally helpful” with his application to IBM – reading through his CV, offering practice interviews and going through potential assessment centre tasks.
