Derby Opera House

The phase 1 masterplan for Derby City Centre was developed to create a much improved urban realm - to enrich the city as a historic city, of innovation, arts and culture. The masterplan aimed to open new spaces and incorporate biophilic strategies within the urban planning. Redundant and unused buildings have been renovated and given new uses to reinvigorate the city centre.

The selected site for redevelopment is located within the heart of Sadler Square, the area was made up of derelict, unoccupied buildings and uninviting passageways that were selectively demolished to create a new inviting space within the city.

The Derby Opera House seeks to be a cultural hub with design inspiration taken from the surrounding context of the Cathedral Quarter. It provides a new high-quality opera house within the heart of the city, surrounded by a new park area with a pavilion for pop-up performances and cultural events. Additionally, the development includes a rooftop restaurant providing key views over the cityscape.
