Razvan-Daniel Popescu, BSc (Hons) Forensic Science with Criminology
What are you doing now?
I am currently working as a DNA Analyst for KFS. I deal with the majority of cases from the midlands and west midlands.
What were the main reasons you took the course?
Forensic Science is something that I have always wanted to do. It has always been my goal to enter this career path and acquire knowledge from all the different departments/branches of forensic science i.e toxicology, DNA analysis, ballistics etc.
Why did you choose to study the course at the University of Derby?
I applied through a student agency for the course at the University of Derby simply because I really loved the way it was presented to me. I liked all the module descriptions even before I started my first year.
What impact has studying this course at Derby had on your career?
Quite a big one. Because my degree is in Forensic Science, it does in a way give me a small advantage when applying to forensic jobs. It also helped build the foundations of my forensic knowledge.
How did the lecturers inspire you?
I was already stubborn about this career path without needing further convincing from anyone else in this world. This being said, I honestly believe that the staff we had between 2013-2016 was amazing because we genuinely had the right person for the right job. I will not start naming anyone in particular because they were all great and every single one of them has helped me during my academic period, whether it was staying with me for long hours to explain simple tasks or even making a lecture that I would normally loath enjoyable.
How do you feel the University has helped you in your career so far?
I believe that the course at the University helped me gain a great understanding of the forensic world. As previously mentioned, it helped build the foundations of my forensic knowledge. It was a great starting point which led to me obtaining a BSc (Hons) degree in forensic science.
What are your future plans?
I will carry on doing my best in my current career, and when the time comes I would love to become a detective and be involved in case work more than I currently am.
What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study this course at the University of Derby?
I believe that not only the course, but this type of career should only be taken if you really have a genuine passion and love for this line of work. Therefore, to those who are like me and have always dreamt of being a forensic scientist one day, apply for this course at the University of Derby because the modules and academics are fantastic.
