Living in the UK

As a student in the UK, you will have a lot of fun and freedom. Our society is based on values of democracy, fairness and mutual respect.

Student costs in the UK are also lower than in the USA and Australia, according to research by HSBC bank. You will find living costs in Derbyshire in particular, very affordable. There are also plenty of part-time jobs if you need to earn money.

Welfare support

Going to university is not just about your studies, there are lots of other considerations, especially for international students.  Moving to another country, a different language, a new currency, a different style of learning and a diverse culture are all things that may affect you. For a lot of students this is also their first time living away from home so you may find that you are not only adjusting to being a new student but to living independently too.

You may already have an idea of the support you will need before you arrive, or it could be that when you get here you find you need help with a certain area, whether this be accommodation, finance, academic study, working while you study or other personal problems you may encounter.

You are not on your own, the University has an extensive support network in place to help you with all aspects of your student life and at the International Student Centre (ISC) we have a dedicated welfare advisor who you can contact for confidential advice by email overseasadvisor@derby.ac.uk, phone +44 (0)1332 591616 or you can drop into our office at our Kedleston Road site (Room B001) to see them in person.

Fitting in and making friends

When Simona first arrived at University she was afraid that as an international student she would feel alone and that it would be hard to make new friends. Fortunately for her, these feelings didn’t last long.
