Derby Business School Student Profiles Neil Venables

“Derby's understanding of the pressures of balancing studying with full time employment has been first rate”

Wanting to understand the 'why' as well as the 'how'

It is over 20 years since I last formally studied for my accountancy qualification, so I wanted to bring my education up to date with current management thinking.

The world has changed and is changing fast. Although I have over 10 years of practical experience at senior director level in the not-for-profit sector, I did not have a theoretical understanding of why some of my leadership succeeded or failed.

Making the most of the MBA's flexibility

Originally my plan was to do the MBA part time, but my work took me away from Derbyshire for 20 months, so I ended up studying online.

I am now back in Derbyshire and between contracts, so am studying my final module full time! That will just leave my dissertation to complete.

Derby's understanding of the pressures of balancing studying with full time employment has been first rate.

They've allowed me to change my study mode throughout - depending on what best suits my work commitments at the time.

Great value for money

Apart from being conveniently local when I'm not working away, my main reasons for choosing the Derby MBA were the flexibility that the course offers and its value for money. The Derbyshire Business School has a respected reputation.

You get out what you put in

As an MBA student you very much get out of the course and the teaching what you are prepared to put in yourself, especially given that most of my study has been e-learning so far.

It's a challenge finding the time to engage in the reflective process, but I am finding it stimulating learning new management ideas and adapting them to my specific work situations.

Leading the way in social housing

I am currently working as an independent consultant in the social housing sector.

I want to stimulate dynamic leadership in the not-for-profit sectors and hope that my MBA will better enable me to lead organisations to success in a business environment that continues to change rapidly.

My message to people considering the Derby MBA

Do it, but be prepared to work hard!
