Ways to study postgraduate courses

Postgraduate study means different things to different people. A part-time masters degree, full-time teacher training, a shorter professionally-accredited qualification or an in-depth research degree. The University of Derby is rated amongst the Top 10 in the UK for postgraduate experience and offers a wide variety of options so our students can be confident they've chosen the right path.

Postgraduate study presents a world of opportunity for career and personal development.  That’s why we offer a full range of postgraduate qualifications across a range of flexible study options to fit into your life.

For these courses, much of your learning will be based at one of our campuses (Derby, Buxton or Chesterfield), and may include traditional lectures, seminars, discussion groups, projects and more. We also use technology and media to bring you the most up-to-date learning resources.

Many of our postgraduate courses are available part-time for UK or EU students. This fits around other commitments, but extends the time taken to complete your degree. Attendance at weekday lectures is usually still required, but on fewer days than full-time students. A part-time postgraduate degree can take two to six years to complete.

Many of our masters degrees are available part-time. Search our part-time courses.

The University of Derby Online Learning is a leading UK provider of online learning, with nearly 15 years’ experience in flexible options for study.

With no fixed lectures or travel required, these courses make it easier to study alongside your career or other commitments. We offer online courses of every level, from free MOOCs (massive open online courses) and short professional development courses, to full postgraduate degrees. You can even study for an MBA online.

Courses are structured, based around trimesters with assessment deadlines. You’ll engage with tutors and fellow students through online discussion boards, café forums, wikis, blogs, Skype and online live taught sessions. You’ll also get additional support and guidance from your personal online learner adviser.

Our lives don’t always fit around the academic calendar. Fortunately, many of our postgraduate courses also have the option to start in January. You'll study the same content with the same expert tutors as the students who start in September.

Key points:

  • The tuition fees, as well as the funding you can access to pay for them, will be the same for courses starting in January
  • Many of these courses are available part-time
  • If you need accommodation in Derby, we can still help you find some – either in University-approved private housing or halls of residence
