Derby Management School brochure

As industries become increasingly globalised, managers need to perform and think in an international context like never before. The MBA Global and MBA Global Finance offer a transformational learning experience which equips you to excel in business, anywhere in the world.

Continue working whilst you’re studying

Block delivery is a new and convenient way to continue working whilst you are studying. This programme is specifically for working professionals who are seeking advancement and want to maintain their career during study. The programme is delivered in three blocks of short intensive 2 week periods at our main Derby Campus in the UK, combined with off-site learning in your own country.

It provides a smooth progression route for graduates with their sights set on international business careers, without the need for a career break. It opens the doors to rewarding and lucrative roles in leadership, management and strategy, financial and performance management, operations, markets, resources, risk and logistics. Throughout, we will strengthen your employability alongside your subject knowledge. You’ll build an impressive and versatile portfolio of transferable skills, supported by a strong focus on career planning.

In-depth knowledge, broad perspectives

Our MBA Global is challenging both academically and practically. Featuring leading-edge theory and practical application, it will give you a critical understanding of global business and management, finance, risk and logistics. The MBA is cleverly structured so that you can move beyond a domestic business mindset to consider issues and seek solutions in a truly global context. Each module will give you advanced and applied knowledge of key aspects of international business.

The mark of a top manager

The MBA Global and MBA Global Finance are accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), the UK’s professional body for managers and leaders, which means you will also achieve the CMI Level 7 Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership, and can apply for Chartered Manager status, when you have successfully completed our programme.

Real-world learning in action

Our MBA Global has practical experience and work-based learning at its heart. You will go beyond the classroom to apply everything you learn to real-world business scenarios. All your assignments are based on genuine challenges faced by organisations today. We draw on fascinating case studies to show you international business from fresh angles. You even have the option of concluding your course with a company placement project, specialising in an area which reflects your professional interests and career aspirations.

A choice of pathways

We offer two MBA pathways so that you can select the study programme which best matches your existing experience, current role and future plans. Both give you a thorough grounding in strategic leadership, financial performance management, global operations, markets and resources, business research methods and data analysis. The general MBA Global pathway focuses on key themes such as risk management and global supply chain management. Meanwhile, the MBA Global Finance pathway enables you to explore international finance, and mergers and acquisitions in greater detail.

An inspiring learning community

Ours is an engaging learning environment, where you’ll receive plenty of individual support from approachable and highly qualified tutors. Our MBA Global participants come from all over the world and from all professions, so you’ll learn with - and from - a diverse group of aspiring business leaders. Everyone brings their own distinctive talents and experiences, so your discussions will be lively, illuminating and often surprising.

What you will study

The MBA Global begins with three core 20-credit modules for all students:

  • Strategic and Financial Performance Management – an opportunity for you to critically analyse the financial data that information systems provide and process this data to convert it into information which can be applied to strategic planning. This module also explores the role of performance measurement systems within an organisation and how the accounting and finance function is used to design approaches which enable the effective and timely management of performance.
  • Critical Perspectives in Strategic Leadership and Management – developing your knowledge and understanding of the principal areas of strategic management and leadership practices emanating from business research and development. This module enables you to take a holistic view of how leaders and managers formulate, implement and evaluate strategies and policies so that they respond to changes in both internal and external environmental dynamics and can develop sustainable competitive advantage.
  • Global Strategic Operations, Markets and Resources – an introduction to the holistic nature of operations, markets and resources. This module approaches the subject from a strategic perspective, demonstrating how the long-term vision of an organisation can be understood, implemented and realised. This can only be possible through the appreciation of effective business operations, clear understanding of market position and relations with the market, and clarity on resource availability.

If you are taking the MBA Global pathway, you will progress to these three 20-credit modules:

  • Business Research Methods and Data Analysis – reflecting how managers need to be able to conduct business research in a systematic and objective manner so they can assess new business opportunities or potential future strategies. This module prepares you to apply your dissertation or corporate placement project in an organisational or industry context, and to undertake management interventions in the workplace. It brings your knowledge of your own area of professional practice together with the skills to investigate issues of professional concern. You will pursue research interests, address workplace problems and report on them in a manner consistent with the demands of masters level study.
  • Risk Management in a Global Context – providing a critical analysis of the management of risks within the global business environment, and how effective management can lead to successful performance. Using a variety of live and historic case studies, you will consider risk identification strategies, risk analysis approaches, and the management of risks.
  • Global Supply Chain Management and Logistics – taking an in-depth look at the increasing need for managing the global supply chain effectively. This aspect of an organisation is seen as a ‘strategic asset’ which can improve efficiency, customer satisfaction and financial results. As a consequence, managing the supply chain is key in terms of how an organisation performs to meet its goals and strategy.

If you are taking the MBA Global Finance pathway, you will progress to these three 20-credit modules:

  • Business Research Methods and Data Analysis – reflecting how managers need to be able to conduct business research in a systematic and objective manner so they can assess new business opportunities or potential future strategies. This module prepares you to apply your dissertation or corporate placement project in an organisational or industry context, and to undertake management interventions in the workplace. It brings your knowledge of your own area of professional practice together with the skills to investigate issues of professional concern. You will pursue research interests, address workplace problems and report on them in a manner consistent with the demands of masters level study.
  • International Finance – covering the way the global financial system functions and exploring international sources of finance and suitable investment opportunities. This module enables you to form a critical awareness of the risks associated with international trade, and to examine how fluctuations in exchange rates affect a business.
  • Mergers and Acquisitions – a module which integrates a wide range of business functions, concepts and theories. As part of an organisation’s strategic plan, mergers and acquisitions have a long-term focus. This module therefore provides you with a strategic perspective on the management of finance and in particular the use of mergers and acquisitions in business strategy.

Whichever pathway you take, you will conclude your MBA Global studies with either a dissertation or a corporate placement project. Both are worth 60 credits.

To achieve your MBA Global you will have completed 180 credits in total.

During the programme, you will also attend two support modules to develop your personal business skills and enhance your career coaching and mentoring skills.

How you will learn

You will study 6 modules in three blocks of short intensive 2 week periods at our main Derby Campus in the UK, along with some off-site learning in your own country.

In the UK you can use our excellent study facilities with access to full support from a dedicated team of tutors who understand this mode of delivery.

Our MBA Global tutors encourage you to contribute your own experience and opinions at every stage of the course. We use a range of teaching and learning methods to bring topics to life and help you apply the theory to real business situations. Throughout the course you are encouraged to apply your learning to the workplace so that you can deliver practical business benefits to your organisation.

You’ll learn through a variety of course materials, online learning materials, case studies, discussions, presentations, enquiry-based learning and problem-solving activities. We provide you with key reading and research activities, and you will make the most of the University’s own online teaching portal.
