How Ben exceeded his own expectations

Ben Sephton is passionate about history. And he was delighted to find the university course he was looking for - our BA (History) - in his home city.

A supportive team

Ben chose our course after meeting Professor Ian Whitehead and Dr Ruth Larsen, and finding out about what he could expect on the programme. And he says the academic team has been incredibly supportive and helped him to exceed his own expectations of his capabilities during his dissertation.

He chose his own project to explore the growth of British technology during the Second World War and how it was used to defend Britain during the Battle of Britain. He says: “My confidence has grown throughout the course of my degree. I encouraged myself to participate in tasks beyond my comfort zone to improve my knowledge.”

I had always had an interest in History and the course has allowed me to grow so much. It was really interesting to learn and understand different approaches in History, especially when looking into debates.

Perfecting presentation skills

Another highlight for Ben was receiving a first in the Public Conference assignment for which he created and presented a French Revolution project. He says his presentation skills soon improved with the practice and encouragement that came with working in a team with others on his course. He adds: “I managed to present with confidence and felt really happy with my delivery, which has inspired me to work this hard for all presentations in the future”.

Ben is going to study a PGCE at Derby in September. He wants to inspire and educate others about History and Politics.
