Kythe is feeling prepared for her dream profession

Kythe Beresford decided to study at Derby after attending an Open Day. What stood our for her was knowing she wouldn’t be classed as just another number. She says: “I felt I would be viewed as an individual student. The focus wasn’t solely on the awards the university had won, but the facilities and opportunities it offered to students.”

And now she feels fully prepared for her career.

Endless opportunities

Kythe has graduated from our MEdu (Master of Education) with Qualified Teacher Status, an integrated course that combines undergraduate and masters level study. She says the variety of modules and incredible opportunities on the programme has given her all the skills and knowledge she needs to become a teacher.

“I’ve had the opportunity to gain additional qualifications in areas like safeguarding and e-safety - being safe on online - as well as see guest speakers who have a real passion for certain areas of the curriculum, including the representation of LGBT+ and specialist subject talks from current subject coordinators.”

The skills and confidence I gained from university and the school placements they organised for me, have made me feel prepared for entering my dream profession.

Invaluable placement support

The course offered three different placements and Kythe says she learned an unbelievable amount from each one. She also feels the support she received from the university while she was on placement was invaluable. She also achieved the Dean's Award - given to our top students - which she thought was impossible for her to achieve.

Building confidence

Kythe was also a Student Ambassador for the university. She feels all her opportunities throughout her time at the University allowed her to gain many key transferable skills.

“I developed my confidence, people skills and presentation skills," she says. "I had the opportunity to work with disadvantaged primary-aged children to raise their aspirations and give talks about what university is like to full lecture theatres full of sixth-form and college students”.
