It might be assumed that the purpose of literary study is to locate the meaning of a text (which has supposedly been put there by its author). However, what if this is not the case? Close analysis often leads us to a situation in which meaning cannot be determined or finalised. This session will involve discussion of some short poems, demonstrating the way in which, as Roland Barthes put it in his influential essay 'The Death of the Author' (1968), 'writing ceaselessly posits meaning ceaselessly to evaporate it'.
