Tell us about the course you’re studying and how it fits with your career aspirations?
The course involves a mixture of Physical and Human Geography Modules as well as Geology modules in Environmental Hazards. Regarding my career aspirations, modules include knowledge of the environment as well as gaining key skills in areas such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote Sensing which is a must to work in a consultancy role.
What were your main reasons for choosing this course?
The main reason why I chose to study this course is simply because it’s what I enjoy, as well as Derby having a great reputation for Geoscience. It has also allowed me to travel to a variety of destinations including North America.
Why did you choose to study the course at Derby?
I found that the university had great resources as well as modules that fit in with what I enjoyed most. The universities Geoscience department is filled with experienced lecturers which I thought would have helped me develop the key skills that I would need to build a career.
How do your lecturers inspire you?
Every lecturer has a great background in their area of study and they all have great experience. They are also extremely approachable and are constantly giving you support and guidance.
Tell us about your modules; what makes them interesting and which are your favourite?
My favourite modules have been ones containing GIS in my second and third year, as this is what I want to pursue as a career. However, I have also very much enjoyed Volcanology and Geological Hazards modules that not only included field work but also were very interesting and helped to broaden my knowledge
What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study this course at the University of Derby?
I would strongly suggest anyone to study a Geoscience course at the University of Derby. The course content is very interesting and the lectures and staff members are all very experienced, knowledgeable and very approachable and willing to help. You will gain skills that are deemed vital when trying to build a career after you graduate. You will also get to see some amazing things on the many field trips that are undertaken whilst you study.
