Keeping
options open
gives Marge a
wealth of experience

As her undergraduate course at Derby drew to a close, Marge Tang still wasn’t sure where the future was taking her. A postgraduate course gave her the time she needed.

Logical progression

Having studied Geology, she decided to stay on at Derby for a Masters in Environmental Assessment and Control, which she took as a part-time option. “The course seemed to offer a good progression from my undergraduate studies,” she explains. “I was already established in Derby so didn’t want to be moving again. And I was familiar with the University – I knew my way around the campus and where to go if I needed help.”

Marge was able to continue some of the interests and activities that she’d started as an undergraduate: “I worked part-time as a student ambassador, became club secretary of the University of Derby Pole Fitness Club, and played dodgeball as part of the Derby Phantoms Dodgeball Club.”

She was also elected as her course representative which enabled her to influence changes to the course: “I contributed towards the introduction of new modules that improved the choice for students with a geoscience background.”

Sense of achievement

Fieldtrips and lab work have built Marge’s specific subject knowledge. Although still undecided about her next steps, she feels that she has accomplished many things during her Masters study: “My biggest success is completing the course and gaining a higher qualification that reflects the effort and dedication I put into it. My time at university has greatly helped me towards my future; as well as the qualification, I have gained skills and experiences that employers are looking for. Being involved with different societies and working as an ambassador have helped build my networks and confidence. The experiences and opportunities I have had have given me an insight into the wider world and what it has to offer.”

Her advice to anyone considering the course is: “Make the most of the opportunities – get into the lab, go on the fieldtrips. And network with your classmates – they could be a useful contact in the future.”
