The level 7 Certificate of Credit in Tools for Delivering Sustainable Solutions to Environmental Problems is a 20 credit module providing a critical understanding of the sources and nature of environmental problems as well as the key environmental management tools and techniques available to environmental professionals and organisations. To prevent and overcome environmental problems of any scale, a range of tools will be introduced in the module, in particular, environmental management systems (EMS) and environmental audits which are key environmental management tools with organisations today.

The module, which has been developed with input from the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA), is suitable for individuals responsible for conducting environmental audits or implementing environmental management systems within organisations. Whilst this module is an opportunity to enhance your CPD and add to your professional portfolio, it is also an excellent opportunity to experience our IEMA accredited online Sustainability and Environmental Management MSc before making a commitment to study the full programme.

By completing this module, you’ll gain a critical understanding of the pollution linkages and their impacts and the range of environmental management tools available for dealing with them in a sustainable manner.

Finally it will give you a greater understanding of developing your abilities to work within a team and to apply a major environmental management tool in a professional manner.

Tools for Delivering Sustainable Solutions to Environmental Problems

This module aims to develop a sound knowledge and understanding of sources and nature of environmental problems and how to solve them in a sustainable manner. The module will explore major environmental problems in different parts of the environment and the key environmental management tools and techniques available to environmental professionals and organisations for dealing with them. While a range of tools will be introduced, a significant portion of the module will focus on environmental management systems (EMS) and environmental audits as key environmental management tools.

The module will be delivered fully online through study materials via the blackboard platform which will include interactive materials, live-classroom sessions, word documents and power point presentations with voiceovers. The module is designed to include a reflective element and students will be required to engage in reflective practice through formative assessments in discussion forums throughout the module. Tutor support will be provided through the discussion forum, e-mail and personal tutoring as appropriate.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate the main concepts of the natural environment and the earth system
  2. Critically evaluate the idea of environmental risk, environmental change, pollution linkages and their impacts
  3. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the principles of major environmental management tools and their application
  4. Demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a professional multi-disciplinary team for the application of a major environmental management tool

  • Environmental Auditing within EMS (ISO 19001; Principles, stages, advantages and disadvantages)

How you will learn

The module is delivered 100% online over 10 weeks using a range of interactive learning materials and some live classroom sessions. Provision is made for discussion and interaction with tutors and fellow students through live virtual classroom sessions and online discussion forums.

You will study alongside students who are on the full MSc Sustainability and Environmental Management, giving you a wider perspective of sustainability from your global student community.

Pace of study

We recommend about 20 hours of study per week to complete one 20-credit module over a 10-week trimester. If you aim to study two modules in one trimester, we recommend 40 hours of study per week.

Assessment method

This course is assessed through 100% coursework with a range of methods, such as essays, research reports, presentations, group work and practical reports.

Entry requirements

You will require: A good first degree in a related subject. Applicants with professional qualifications or relevant experience can also apply.

English language qualifications

If English is not your first language you will need an English language qualification. For this course you will need at least one of the following:

* If you don't have GCSE Maths, you can study our Certificate of Credit in Introduction to Maths in Preparation for Higher Education, which is a 20-credit module designed to help you develop your mathematical skills in preparation for higher education. 

**If you have a minimum of IELTS level 4.5, you can study our Certificate of Credit in English for Academic Purposes, which we will accept as evidence that you are able to perform at a suitable level of IELTS 6.0. We will also accept the Certificate of Credit as evidence that you can perform at GCSE level.
