Scholarships for students from the USA

As a student from the United States, you could be eligible for one of our scholarships and discounts, which can be used together to offer a reduction in fees during your first year of study. You can apply for some scholarships once you have an offer from us and others will be applied automatically if you are eligible.

You must be applying for a full-time degree. Applications for postgraduate research, online studies, foundation and pre-sessional language programmes are not eligible for a discount or scholarship. Please read our full terms and conditions for details.

Here are our current scholarships for 2021/22:

One full year’s tuition fees to a limited number of exceptional undergraduate and postgraduate international students.

You will need to achieve high academic results exceeding the entry criteria for the course and demonstrate exceptional achievements in extracurricular activity, either in your own time or through your employment in the last two years in your personal statement.

You can only apply for this scholarship once you have an offer from us. Please read our terms and conditions for full details.

£5,000 scholarship to a limited number of eligible undergraduate and postgraduate international students who can demonstrate excellence in their application.

You will need to achieve high academic results exceeding the entry criteria for the course and demonstrate excellence in extracurricular activity, either in your own time or through your employment in the last two years in your personal statement.

You can only apply for this scholarship once you have an offer from us.

£2,000 scholarship for all eligible international students studying a postgraduate taught programme (PGT)*

You will automatically be awarded this discount unless you have been awarded the Vice-Chancellor Scholarship, the International Excellent Student Scholarship or a GREAT Scholarship.

*Postgraduate Scholarships are not available for students studying with the University of Derby Online Learning, this are only available to students studying on-campus.

Below is a summary of our annual tuition fees for international students in UK pounds before any scholarship, bursary or discount has been applied.

US Federal Loan

US citizens or eligible non-citizens enrolled on a course that is at least 50% full-time may be eligible for student aid loans from the US government for their studies. The University of Derby is authorised as a foreign school to provide loans under the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan) Program.

General entry requirements

International Foundation Year:

  • Students with a High School Graduation Diploma (Grade 12) would usually be eligible for the International Foundation Year subject to obtaining a minimum of 70%, GPA of 2.0 or grade C.


Applicants meeting the following requirements are usually eligible for direct entrance onto Bachelor programmes

  • High School Diploma or General Educational Development with a GPA of 3.0

Plus one of the following:

  • Standard SATs with a minimum of 1600/2400 in each subject
  • New SATs 1060/1600 – we do not require the optional Essay score
  • ACT score of 24+
  • Three Advanced Placement subjects with a minimum score of 3

Where specific subjects are requested, we can accept an old subject SAT test with a minimum of 500, a new subject SAT with a minimum score of 550, an AP with a minimum score of 3 or High School Honours Classes with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

A two year Associate Degree with a GPA of 3/4 is also acceptable for entrance to the second year of certain programmes

  • Bachelors degrees from institutions recognised by NARIC or government recognised institutions
  • Requirements will vary depending on recognition of institution and scoring system used. Applications are considered on a case-by-case basis
  • A score of 60% is considered comparable to a UK 2:1; a score of 50% is considered comparable to a UK 2:2 plus work experience

If you've studied in a country where English is the first language like the USA and Canada, you may not need a formal English language qualification. We will look at everyone's application individually.
