A lively, multi-cultural city, Derby is home to major multi-national companies like Rolls Royce and Toyota. It's a welcoming and safe place with lots going on for international students to really experience British culture.

Scholarships for students from Africa

As a student from Africa, you could be eligible for one of our scholarships and discounts, offering a reduction in fees during your first year of study. We award scholarships based on your application to study; there is no separate form to complete. All applications from eligible students will be considered for a scholarship by our international admissions team. We will notify you of your scholarship when we make you an offer, and apply your discount to your remaining fees.

You must be applying for a full-time degree. Applications for postgraduate research, online studies, foundation and pre-sessional language programmes are not eligible for a discount or scholarship. 

Here is a list of our current scholarships:

We pay one full year’s tuition fees to a limited number of exceptional undergraduate and postgraduate international students.

You will need to achieve high academic results exceeding the entry criteria for the course and demonstrate exceptional achievements in extracurricular activity, either in your own time or through your employment in the last two years in your personal statement.

£5,000 scholarship to a limited number of eligible undergraduate and postgraduate international students who can demonstrate excellence in their application.

You will need to achieve high academic results exceeding the entry criteria for the course and demonstrate excellence in extracurricular activity, either in your own time or through your employment in the last two years in your personal statement.

£5,000 scholarship to a limited number of eligible postgraduate international students on the MBA course.

You will have evidence of high leadership skills in previous or current work experience and have achieved high academic results exceeding the entry criteria for the course.

£3,000 scholarship to a limited number of eligible undergraduate and postgraduate international students from the following countries who have demonstrated high achievement:

  • SE Asia (Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia)
  • China (including Hong Kong)
  • South Asia (India, Pakistan)
  • Africa

If you are from a country not listed above, you may still be awarded a scholarship at the discretion of the University.

You will need to achieve high academic results exceeding the entry criteria for the course and demonstrate a good understanding of your chosen subject area, previous experience in the field and clear aims and objectives for the future in your personal statement.

£3,000 scholarship to a limited number of eligible undergraduate and postgraduate international students for selected courses taught at the Centre for Contemporary Hospitality and Tourism based at our Buxton Campus.

You will need to achieve high academic results exceeding the entry criteria for the course and demonstrate excellence, knowledge and experience in your proposed field of study in your personal statement.

£2,000 scholarship for all eligible international students studying a postgraduate taught programme (PGT).

We offer a number of sports scholarships that are also available to international and EU students.

General entry requirements

International Foundation Year

West African Senior School Certificate Examination, NECO Senior School Certificate or General Certificate of Education Ordinary.

Students with five passes at grade C or above would usually be eligible for the IFY.

UKVI IELTS 4.5 with a minimum of 4.0 in all components (CEFR B1) is also required.

Undergraduate

Students with a minimum CGPA of 2.5 in the National Diploma can typically be considered for direct entrance onto Bachelor programmes.

Students with a minimum CGPA of 2.5 in the Ordinary National Diploma can typically be considered for direct entrance to the first year of Bachelor programmes.

Students with a minimum CGPA of 2.5 in the Higher National Diploma can typically be considered for direct entrance onto the final year of Bachelor programmes.

The West African GCE Advanced Levels are comparable in terms of grading and equivalence to UK A levels.

Postgraduate

Bachelor degrees from NARIC or government recognised institutions can normally be accepted for master’s studies.

A score of 60-70% or Second Class Honours (Upper Division) is considered comparable to a UK 2:1

A score of 50-59% or Second Class Honours (Lower Division) is considered comparable to a UK 2:2

English

The following qualifications offer English exemption:

  • English with a grade of C6 in the WAEC or GCSE O level (if completed since 2017)
  • Medium Of Instruction letter for Bachelor and Master Degrees or Diplomas

Intenational Foundation Year

Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education

Students with minimum grades of C in five subjects would usually be eligible for the International Foundation Year.

UKVI IELTS 4.5 with a minimum of 4.0 in all components (CEFR B1) is also required.

Undergraduate

Students with a minimum score of 60% in the University Diploma / Ordinary Diploma / Ordinary Technician Diploma can typically be considered for direct entrance to Bachelor programmes.

Students with a minimum score of 60% in the Higher Diploma / Higher Technician Diploma can typically be considered for entrance to the final year of a Bachelor programme.

Postgraduate

We require a Bachelor degree from a NARIC or government recognised institution, a typical offer would be:

A score of 60% is considered comparable to a UK 2:1
A score of 50% is considered comparable to a UK 2:2

Degrees issued by private institutions must have national recognition from CHE. You can download the list of approved private degrees here.

English 

The following awards offer English language exemptions:

Students with a grade C or above in English language in the KCSE are exempt from English requirements.

Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology do not have a 3rd class descriptor.

  • Medium Of Instruction letter for Bachelor and Master Degrees or Diplomas
