Think, Reflect, Succeed (TRS)

The Widening Access Team’s Think, Reflect, Succeed programme is designed to guide Year 10 and Year 12 learners in developing their higher order thinking skills. The event is delivered in three sessions on the topics of Critical Thinking; Reflection; and Research. The event also explores metacognition with the learners by referring to the processes used to plan, monitor and assess their own individual thinking and learning styles throughout.  

In 2023, Think, Reflect, Succeed was delivered over three separate events to 107 learners in total, 53 learners in Y12 and 54 learners in Y10. All these events were delivered either on site at Kedleston Road or in school.   

In line with our evaluation methodology, pre- and post- programme surveys were undertaken to determine distance travelled in both the learners' attitudes to higher education and self-reflection on their understanding of all three topics that were delivered. 100 learners in total completed the surveys, 47 learners in Y12 and 53 learners in Y10. 

Impact

The graphs illustrate the attitudinal responses from learners who took part in all three sessions. The data includes responses from both Year 10 and Year 12 learners from all sessions that were delivered.  

Each question asked whether the learner felt confident that they could apply the skills they had learnt to their current and future studies.  

Evaluation evidence shows significant increases in learners understanding of critical thinking; reflection; and research, and their belief in applying these skills now and in the future. It is clear learners understood the sessions and felt that they were able to more confidently apply these skills to support their attainment.
