Human Biology at the University of Derby video transcript

I'm Julianna Bahyra, I'm a second-year student here at the University of Derby and I study Human Biology. I looked at a variety of courses, but the Human Biology course really stood out to me, I liked the campus here, and the facilities on site were excellent, and I also really liked how passionate all the staff were here. They were clearly really passionate about Biology and inspiring the next generation. I just loved the variety of modules that were on offer as well. I like the fact you could tailor the course depending on where your interests lie and that's really what drew me to this course.

I'm Dr Elizabeth Marsh, I am the Senior Lecturer in Molecular and Cellular Biology and the Programme Leader of Human Biology. Throughout students' time with us there are a number of prescribed modules. So these are modules that have to be taken, have to be studied, and they cover those fundamentals that we need each student to study during their time with us, and then as the degree progresses students get much more optionality and choices so that they can pursue their own interests through the programme. So these might be aspects of psychology, aspects of sport, aspects of genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, disease mechanisms, oncology, and immunology. There's a huge range and that's what's so special about the degree the programme is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, which is our professional body, and gives you quality assurance of the academic quality of our programme.

So my name is Dr Opeyemi Stella Ademowo, I'm a Lecturer in Molecular Cell Biology and the Deputy Lead for Human Biology at the University of Derby. So we have incorporated subjects in the field of biosciences, psychology and sports science to help our students to actually understand the effect of lifestyle choices on health, as well as to be able to understand infection and different genetic diseases. So the subject areas that we focus on are anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology and the facilities that we use for these different subjects includes the anatomy suites, we have the microbiology lab, we have molecular biology lab where we conduct classes like DNA analysis, and we also have the biochemistry aspect of it where we look at the different compositions of different macromolecules such as the proteins. We have this new OMX facility that is able to do metabolomics, proteomics and even lipidomics for our research. The teaching team here are brilliant, they're really supportive, we also have personal academic tutors here as well - they're always really helpful for further guidance and making sure that your experience here is as positive and enjoyable as possible.

My name is Jess and I'm studying Human Biology. So I currently work at the COVID test centre which is on campus and that's a fantastic opportunity, it's given me real-life lab work, and also there's so many research opportunities, for example at the moment that I'm hoping to get involved with the long COVID trial.

My name is Euclide Vanga and I'm studying Human Biology. So I'd say research skills, laboratory skills, you know using microscopes, pipetting definitely. communication skills as well and because as you go on to work you know your communication skills have to be up to par.

So I would say mostly I've enjoyed using loads of different lab equipment that I've never had the opportunity to use before, and also I've really enjoyed being around like-minded people and students and peers, so you can have really good in-depth conversations about your subject that you - I love.
