Personal academic tutoring

Your one-to-ones

We are committed to implementing a new system of personal academic tutoring (PAT) for all undergraduate students. We recognise the value to students in having allocated time to engage with an academic member of staff on an individual basis, to discuss their academic progress, university experience and professional aspirations.

Personal academic tutoring offers academic staff the opportunity to work with students on an individual level in order to foster academic challenge and to ensure that students feel stretched but confident to achieve their academic/professional goals. Personal academic tutorials are the ideal environment for the student experience to be felt in an individualised way, with uniquely tailored opportunities to encourage transformational learning.

Our Personal Academic Tutoring Undergraduate Policy 2018-2021 outlines the purpose, principles and requirements of the University's approach. It is designed to support student retention, progression and graduate employability by staff and students working together to create academic and professional goals.

Our Personal Academic Tutoring Postgraduate [Taught] Policy 2021 is designed to support students on all postgraduate taught programmes in a way that is responsive to their specific academic needs and aspirations. The principles of the personal academic tutoring approach are the same but applied to the different student and academic contexts in postgraduate study.

Training for PAT began in September 2018 and is mandatory for all staff. Staff can check upcoming dates and book on to training via the Learning and Teaching intranet pages. The materials used in these sessions and associated PAT resources are also available to view on the Learning and Teaching intranet.
