Innovation and Research Round-Up

April Edition

In this month's Innovation and Research Round-Up, we celebrate both award success and funding success. Plus, our team have launched a survey to understand how universities use specialist equipment and facilities to engage with the private, public and third sectors.

Biodiversity stripes featured in the European Environment Agency briefing

The European Environment Agency (EEA) have recently published a briefing note which highlights the dramatically changing natural environment and its connection with humans. Professor Miles Richardson’s biodiversity stripes, which show changes in the variety and abundance of nature over time, are referenced within the briefing as a clear indicator of how there has been an unprecedented change caused by humans.

An award winning team

The coral spawning lab has won a prestigious and highly competitive international award for impact. The lab was founded by Professor Michael Sweet, Dr Jamie Craggs and Vince Thomas who have won the SeAct MSC Foundation award for Coral Restoration.

Following on from over a decade of work trying to crack coral spawning ex situ (away from the corals' natural location) and a PhD conducted by Jamie Craggs at the University of Derby, the team developed the coral spawning lab in 2020. The mission is to spawn and grow corals at industry scale, year round, meeting the necessary demands for restoration and research purposes. The vision is to enable and equip every practitioner, reef manager and restorer with the capabilities to spawn coral ex situ in a controlled and reliable manner.

Interested in learning more about coral reefs and the team's work? Professor Mike Sweet, one of the award winners, is presenting his work on coral reefs at the next Professorial Inaugural Lectures.

Mental Health and Productivity Pilot and a new hub

The University of Derby was successful in becoming a partner in the Mental Health and Productivity Pilot (MHPP) in July 2019. The aim of MHPP is to reduce absence and presenteeism related to poor mental health and reduce the stigma and discrimination around mental health in the workplace. The team have worked with organisations across D2N2 (Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire), Stoke, and Staffordshire and the Marches, supporting them to integrate effective health and wellbeing interventions into their workplace, influencing culture, employee engagement and productivity.

A recent development sees the launch of the Work Health Hub. The Work Health Hub is an online platform dedicated to health and wellbeing of businesses and their workforce. It will draw upon our experience of working with organisations across a variety of sectors and provide:

Survey examines how higher education uses specialist facilities and equipment

The University of Derby, in partnership with Dispace Ltd, has launched a survey aiming to understand more about how the higher education sector utilises specialist facilities and equipment for knowledge exchange and revenue generation. The survey aims to identify common barriers and examples of best practices of how universities can engage with external stakeholders to leverage their assets and generate additional income beyond teaching and research. A report including clear recommendations will be published this summer.

Universities report use of the specialist equipment and facilities to engage with the private, public and third sectors within the Higher Education Business and Community Interaction Survey (HEBCIS). Selected HEBCIS metrics are used to inform Higher Education Innovation Funding (HEIF) allocated by Research England. More recently, income reported within HEBCIS, relating to use of equipment and facilities, has been used as metrics within the Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF).

The survey is open to all, with a particular interest to hear from those whose remit includes the management and promotion of relevant facilities as assets.

The survey is now live and will remain open until 24 April. For further information, please contact Knowledge Exchange Manager Sophie Beer at s.beer@derby.ac.uk.

Success with funding

Dr Eleni Michopoulou and Dr Iride Azara have successfully won a project funded by the European Union Global Diaspora Facility (EUDIF) through the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD).

The project responds to the need identified by the Freetown City Council (FCC), Sierra Leone, to strengthen its local heritage tourism to attract the Sierra Leonean diaspora globally, with major communities predominantly in the UK, USA, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. This is in line with both the country’s medium-term National Development Plan 2019-2023 and National Labour Migration Policy which identifies the diaspora as partners to national sustainable development particularly in the health, education, and trade sectors.

This project's main objective is to develop a strategic plan and framework to contribute to the rebranding and promotion of the heritage tourism assets of Freetown.
