Healthy Eating Vlog 2: What is a balanced diet? video transcript

Young boy (Sebastian) is sat in the garden with five bowls containing different fruit and vegetable items in front of him.

"Hello, I am Sebastian and I am here to talk to you about healthy eating."

"Our bodies need to last us our whole lives and its important to give them what they need so they can stay in great condition. There are four things our bodies need to stay really healthy: good quality sleep, exercise, water and healthy food."

"We're going to be thinking about the last one of these today, healthy food. You may have heard the UK Government advises you should eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. This is because fruit and vegetables contain the nutrients our bodies need to repair themselves."

"But eating the same fruit and vegetables everyday isn't enough. Each one contains different vitamins and minerals which are useful to our bodies. So variety is key!"

"Lets start by looking at what makes up a portion. Here are some examples."

Sebastian opens his arms to point towards the bowls of fruit and veg in front of him, then lifts each bowl one of by towards the camera as he explains.

"Three heaped tablespoons of peas."

"One corn on the cob."

"Seven cherry tomatoes."

"One pear."

"Or two small satsumas."

"Potatoes don't count towards your five a day as these are classed as starchy food. They are counted as carbohydrates on your plate."

"What do you notice about the contents of these bowls?"

Sebastian opens his arms to point towards the bowls of fruit and veg in front of him.

"One big difference is that they are a variety of colours and that's really important. that's one of the ways we know they contain different vitamins and minerals."

"So as well as making sure you eat five portions of fruit and veg a day, I think you need to think about their colours."

"Are you ready for a challenge? I thought you'd say yes!"

Sebastian points to the camera.

"I challenge you to eat as many different types of fruit and vegetables as you can in a month. Why don't you make a chart to stick on your fridge? You can tick off a new fruit or vegetable the first time you eat it that month. Eat twenty different types a month and you're a star, eat thirty different types a month and you're a superstar! If you manage to eat forty different types a month then you're a mega star!"

"Happy eating everyone! Hope you enjoy my challenge, bye!"

Sebastian waves to the camera.
