Placements take Maria closer to her dream

Studying at Derby helped our student Maria take the steps towards meeting her career goal.

First steps towards an exciting future

Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy student Maria Stejter has dreamt of being a Psychotherapist, with an ambition to open her own Counselling and Psychotherapy practice. After moving to the United Kingdom six years ago, she pursued an undergraduate degree in Psychology at the University of Derby and gained valuable experience working in mental health. After successfully graduating, she decided to further her learning and career development by progressing on to the MSc Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy:

I feel like this University is my second home explains Maria. The decision to study at the University of Derby was the best decision of my life. I have found the MSc Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy course particularly fulfilling, as it has developed my skills as a professional, but also as a person and for this I am eternally grateful.

On her decision to continue with her postgraduate studies at Derby, Maria explains:

I decided to study the course at the University of Derby as I was aware of its outstanding reputation. This course is recognised as one of the best in the country and is accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). This gave me the confidence that the course is run to the highest professional standards, therefore creating opportunities for further career development.

Perfecting skills

Maria has completed a number of placements during her studies, allowing her to develop her skills:

I feel extremely lucky to have carried out work placements at several organisations including a bereavement support centre and a private practice, whereby I have encountered clients with many different types of issues.

Each placement has been a milestone in my self-development. All my clients have a unique story, bringing new challenges to my abilities as a trainee. I use different approaches and tailor my sessions to meet the needs of different client groups. I have become more flexible and confident through experience and have learned how to behave in various situations.

Guidance and advice received from my Clinical Supervisor and the Programme Lead has been invaluable. The combination of practice and theory is a perfect mix and prepares you for the practical application of skills needed in the real world when supporting individuals who are in need.

Studying at the University of Derby is exciting, and it is more than just studying. You will meet new friends and colleagues, the most inspiring people and you will become part of a unique community, which is incredibly friendly, supportive and motivated to make a change in the world.
