Ross Gilmour

BSc (Hons) Sound, Light and Live Event Engineering

Class of 2024

Ross Gilmour is a lighting technician who works on live events such as music festivals, concerts and tours. To prepare for his career, Ross studied Sound, Light and Live Event Engineering, where he developed new skills, gained hands-on experience and made valuable industry connections.

A career change

Ross made the decision to change career and enrolled at the university to gain the knowledge and experience needed to make the transition. Before becoming a lighting technician, he spent ten years designing football kits, however he soon realised he was ready for a new challenge. The Sound, Light, and Live Event Engineering course not only helped Ross develop his skills, it also allowed him to build lasting friendships and benefit from the expertise of academic and industry professionals.

“I really enjoyed meeting my course mates, many of whom are still close friends today. The university also offered the opportunity to learn from incredibly supportive tutors, who played a key role in helping me switch careers by teaching me new skills and connecting me with people in the live events industry."

The guidance and encouragement of his tutors gave Ross the confidence to embrace his new career. He found their real-world advice and connections with industry professionals invaluable when it came to securing practical experience. Access to state-of-the-art equipment also allowed Ross to learn through hands-on practice, and he has fond memories of assisting with the university's on-campus events.

One fond memory is providing lighting for the media students’ final performances. This involved assisting with multiple performances across one day at the University of Derby, creating a mini festival.

Advice for current students

Ross encourages students to take full advantage of the opportunities available at the University, whether it’s learning from tutors or gaining hands-on experience both on campus and in the events industry.

“Take the time to experiment with any equipment you have access to and don’t hesitate to ask for advice. Learn from tutors who have real-world industry experience, and look for opportunities to work in the events industry. I joined a local crew, which gave me valuable industry experience and contacts that helped me secure a job after graduation.”

Finding his dream role

Since excelling on his course, Ross has achieved numerous career milestones. One of his highlights was touring with Alfie Boe across the UK and Ireland.

“My first ever tour was for five weeks with Alfie Boe as a lighting designer and operator. I did well and returned for a second tour with Alfie, again as lighting designer and operator. I have also operated lights on the main stage at TRNSMT festival, Connect Festival and Creamfields.”

Ross’ role is incredibly varied, depending on the event and the position that he holds. When Ross works as a designer or operator, he designs the lighting show and then controls the lighting during the live performance. As a technician, his role focuses mainly on setting up the equipment for the live event. This involves unloading equipment, installing the lighting rig and floor package ready for the performance. He also solves any problems that arise and is on hand during the performance.

After the show, Ross packs the equipment to travel to the next venue and begins preparations for the next event. His studies have equipped him with a wide range of skills, from teamwork and problem-solving to technical expertise with the equipment.

“Working as a lighting technician in the live events industry is a perfect fit for me and hardly ever feels like work. I have moved to Liverpool and now I get the opportunity to travel for my job. So, far I have travelled all over the UK, Ireland, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and Austria.”

An exciting future

Ross is excited about the adventures ahead, including traveling to new countries and working on fresh projects.

“Currently, I’m working away on a 5-week tour around European arenas with German rapper and singer Shirin David. Once I return, I have a few house tech jobs lined up at Victoria Warehouse in Manchester. These jobs often allow me to operate lights for support acts in a 3500-capacity venue. Then it will be time for festival season again!.”
