James Pilkington

Mathematics and Computer Science & Strategic Management

Class of 2008

James Pilkington is a firm believer that learning never stops. Now Senior Manager of Digital Implementation at global creative tech company Monotype, James’s career journey reflects a deep commitment to growth - both personal and professional. After completing his BSc in Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Derby in 2008, James returned 15 years later to study for a Masters in Strategic Management.

Continuous learning and discovering new passions

When James reflects on his experience as a student, he fondly remembers making great friends, discovering new hobbies and developing skills that he still uses today. These positive experiences led James to view life as a continuous learning opportunity.

The mindset of continuous learning stayed with me, so much so that, 15 years after my undergraduate degree, I returned to Derby for my Master's in Strategic Management. Being able to directly apply my learning to my day-to-day role is both exciting and extremely valuable in my career.”

James’ time at the University of Derby wasn’t just about academics. He discovered a love for archery, a sport he picked up in his final year and one that transformed his outlook on focus and discipline.

“My proudest achievement was representing the University in archery competitions. I only took up the sport in my final year, but it completely changed my perspective on discipline, focus, and personal growth. Even today, archery remains a passion of mine, and I wouldn’t have discovered it without the University of Derby. University isn’t just about academics - it’s also about discovering what drives you.”

A career at the intersection of technology and business

James works at the intersection of technology and business as the Senior Manager of Digital Implementation at Monotype. He leads key digital initiatives by working with sales, engineering, and customer success teams - ensuring seamless product implementation and integration. His unique combination of technical expertise and business acumen allows him to bridge the gap between tech and strategy, turning complex challenges into scalable solutions.

His background in Mathematics and Computer Science provided a strong foundation in problem-solving, analytics, and structured thinking.

“My programming background has been a huge advantage in data integration and technical product management. Even the logic and structure I learned in uni modules still help me design better solutions today.”

One career highlight was spending 12 months in India to support an international team transition project—an experience that not only advanced his leadership and communication skills but also changed his life.

“This involved working on-site at the Indian office for 12 months and was a high step forward in my career. Progressing my management, communication, and professional skills all while having the opportunity to travel and work in a different culture. This experience is one that will stick with me for life and one I often talk about for my professional journey.”

“Working in India was a major career milestone, but also a personal one - I met my wife there! She was on a placement from the Boston office, and three years later, I moved to the US and we got married.”

James has since worked across four countries - the UK, India, Israel, and the USA - gaining global insight and expanding his cultural perspective.

Mentorship and paying it forward

Having benefitted from mentorship early in his own career, James now mentors others, helping emerging professionals navigate their own paths

“At a certain stage in your career, the success of others becomes just as rewarding as personal achievements. Helping someone else reach their career goals is incredibly fulfilling. If you're considering mentoring, my advice is to listen, offer guidance based on experience and encourage mentees to think critically about their career paths.”

Advice for current students and recent graduates

For those who are interested in a similar role, James advises them to develop a strong understanding of business. Learn what drives companies, how decisions are made, and how technology supports business goals. James believes that the best technical solutions are the ones that align with real business needs.

James encourages students to continue learning technical skills.

“The tech landscape evolves rapidly, and staying on top of trends, tools, and best practices will set you apart. Early in my career, I mistakenly thought learning ended with my degree, but that was just the foundation. Continuous learning - whether through courses, hands-on projects, or simply keeping up with industry news - has been vital to my success.”

The more you can work through real challenges, collaborate with others, and adapt to changing needs, the more prepared you’ll be for a role like this. I recently returned to Derby to pursue a Masters degree. Learning never stops, and staying adaptable is key to long-term success.

Looking ahead

James is keeping his future plans open, choosing to follow meaningful opportunities rather than climbing a traditional corporate ladder.  He would like to stay within the product space as he enjoys being customer facing, where he can continue making a tangible impact.
