About

I am an Associate Professor and Head of Diagnostic Imaging, Operating Department Practice & Osteopathy at the University of Derby.

I am a qualified HCPC registered Diagnostic Radiographer. Before joining the University I worked as a Diagnostic Radiographer in the NHS for approximately 10 years, specialising in CT and MRI scanning. I started working at the University as a Lecturer in Diagnostic Radiography in 2006, progressing up to Senior Lecturer, Assistant Subject Head, then into my current role in 2013.

As well as my role here at Derby, I am also a member of the College of Radiographers Research Advisory Group, and I am a peer reviewer for the 'Radiography' journal and the 'Journal of Medical Imaging & Radiation Sciences'.

In 2020 I was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by Advance HE. This award recognised the impact that I have had on learning & teaching within the Diagnostic Imaging discipline area at the University of Derby.

Teaching responsibilities

Teaching responsibilities relate primarily to my clinical specialism in CT and MRI, my research interests in patient centred care, as well as communication, professionalism, leadership and governance.

I recently launched a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) about patient centred care in diagnstic radiography, which was based on the research findings from my PhD.

Professional interests

Research interests

Since moving into education I have developed a passion for research, and in particular for research which improves patient care and student education. This has led to a number of different projects looking at areas such as student transition to clinical placement, student’s experience of dealing with very ill patients, and the use of non-traditional placements.

I recently completed my PhD by Published Works. In 2017 I was awarded funding from the College of Radiographers Industry Partnership scheme to carry out a large research project to define informed measures of patient centred care. This project was at the centre of my PhD work.

My supervisors were Professor Dawn Forman, Professor Kathryn Mitchell and Professor Chris Brannigan

Experience in industry

I worked as a Diagnostic Radiographer in the NHS for ten years before moving into higher education. My specialist area of radiography practice was CT and MRI scanning. During my clinical time I worked at Nottingham City Hospital, Derbyshire Royal Infirmary and Leicester Royal Infirmary, so I have lots of links in the clinical departments we send our students to for placements.

Additional interests and activities

I undertake regular clinical update days to keep my knowledge and skills up-to-date.
