You’re hired! Emily gets through to events industry’s Apprentice-style contest

9 February 2017

Michelle Obama, Kanye West and Claudio Ranieri have all played a part in winning University of Derby student, Emily Evans, a place in the UK events industry’s top talent competition.

Emily’s application for a place in The Eventice final features an interview with her three heroes – in reality, thinly disguised fellow students standing in for the celebrities –  in a tongue-in-cheek video which persuaded the judges she was passionate enough to go for the prize of a full-time job with a top company.

The brainchild of Liz Sinclair, Director of esp recruitment, The Eventice is an Apprentice-style competition run in association with Mash Media and the Bluehat Group.

“It can be tough for graduates to get their first step on the ladder, so this competition allows them the opportunity to win one of the most prestigious graduate jobs available,” said a spokesman for Eventice.

“This year’s prize is the chance for a job with industry leaders Bluehat Group, Identity Group and Easyfairs.”

Emily said: “Events is the most creative industry out there.

“The appeal of working in events is to be able to see the finished product as well as constantly meeting new people.”

Emily, who is studying for a BA (Hons) in Events Management, added: “The fact that it stretches globally means it’s full of opportunity, and to be honest, I can’t imagine myself being this passionate for any other career.”

Emily will be among the 18 finalists who will go to London to take part in a series of tasks over three days, showcasing their ability to multi-task, organise, lead, project-manage, negotiate, network and present. Their skills are assessed by a group of industry professionals over the three days. The final five students make a presentation to a panel of industry experts, and the two winners are offered a job on the spot.

“Our Events course is based on real world experience, preparing our students for just this sort of opportunity,” said Olivia Ramsbottom, one of Emily’s lecturers.
