From aggregate apprentice to youngest depot manager in the South-East

Josh Herridge began his career at Aggregate Industries UK and has since applied the knowledge acquired during his Mineral Products apprenticeship to become, at 26, the youngest depot manager in the South-East.

Josh delivered an inspiring presentation about his experience as a young industry professional at the Mineral Engineering Society's annual awards event. The event drew together students, staff, alumni and industry professionals to celebrate the students' hard workAs well as providing the opportunity for the awards to be presented, the event also enabled the students and alumni to demonstrate their knowledge by presenting their research projects.

Driving sustainability

Josh’s project involved researching the relationship between employee engagement and increased recycled asphalt input. To investigate this, he undertook a rigorous overhaul of the plant’s existing training programme to increase communication and transparency with employees when conveying the importance of sustainability. Communicating in this way resulted in an increase in recycled asphalt input, demonstrating that increased employee engagement has a positive impact on environmentally friendly practices. Josh's project reinforces both the importance of sustainable practices, as well as team morale.

Josh's impressive research project and overall dedication to the aggregate industry resulted in him taking home second place in the MES Outstanding Awards Event!

Plans for the future

Josh is already forming innovative plans to find new ways to make the plant more sustainable. This time, he believes he can reduce the plant’s carbon footprint by localising its recycled asphalt supply.
