Course reccomendation allows Fern to find her feet in the industry

Fern joined Total Energies on graduating from her degree in chemistry. Although her studies were an excellent foundation for her role as a technologist, Fern hadn’t worked within the asphalt and pavement industry before and wanted to gain a deeper understanding of the subject. Her work colleagues had already taken the FdSc Asphalt and Pavement Technology programme so she joined the University on their recommendation.

“It made sense to study at the University of Derby. I wanted to develop my knowledge of the asphalt and pavement industry and the course has a good reputation within the sector. My colleagues all found the foundation degree really useful, so I knew it would be a good fit. The teaching staff are all enthusiastic and are from within the industry too, so were able to give anecdotes of their experience which kept the course interesting.”

Road to success through hands on learning

Although studying whilst working full time can be challenging, Fern felt it was the best way to learn. “I’m involved in a lot of research and testing, so I don’t always get to see how my work translates out on the road. The course helped me to connect the two which I found invaluable. The teaching helped me to develop a much deeper understanding of various aspects of the industry and I had a few lightbulb moments during my studies!”

Growing personally and professionally

Fern also enjoyed learning alongside others from within the industry. “It was a diverse group and each person had their own area of expertise which they shared with us. It really helped bring the learning to life.” The programme not only develops subject specific knowledge, it also helps students develop their business skills, which is important when managing projects or leading a team. Fern found this aspect of the course to be particularly helpful.

“I hadn’t realised just how useful the business management module would be. I knew I was going to learn a lot about the asphalt and pavement industry, but the business aspect of the course has probably had the biggest impact. It’s helped me to change the way I work on a day-to-day basis. I understand how to manage my time much more effectively, which also helps with managing projects.”

Networking and growing connections

Studying a higher-level qualification can also develop other important skills that are useful within the workplace as Fern experienced.

“Developing my knowledge of the industry, has helped me feel much more confident in putting my ideas forward to the rest of the team and I’m finding I can contribute a lot more. It’s also helped expand my network. The programme is so well known, nearly everyone in the industry has done it, so it’s a good talking point when I’m meeting new people at conferences or events. I’d highly recommend the programme to anyone in the sector who is thinking of developing their knowledge and skills.”
