What is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a genuine job with an accompanying skills development programme. Through an apprenticeship, apprentices gain the technical knowledge, practical experience, and wider skills they need for their immediate job and future career.

The apprentice gains this through a mix of learning in the workplace, formal off-the-job training, and the opportunity to practise new skills in a real work environment.

Apprenticeships for current staff

These apprenticeships are offered alongside your current role. This means you get the opportunity to develop the skills needed, whilst progressing your career. These courses can be undertaken at any time during your career at University of Derby and reflects our ongoing commitment to your development.

Apprenticeship standards

New apprenticeship standards have been designed by 'employer led' groups known as 'trailblazers' who have worked together to develop them ensuring they meet employer needs. The Standards describe the skills, knowledge and behaviours required to undertake the role and are approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships and will include an end point assessment (EPA).

Apprenticeship levels

Apprenticeships range from level 2, equivalent to a GCSE, to level 7, equivalent to a Masters degree.

What apprenticeships are available?

For the full range of apprenticeships available nationally please see the Apprenticeships Standards list.

Please note that some Training Providers provide accredited qualifications alongside the Apprenticeship.

The University is committed to the development and progression of all its employees, whichever route you follow, the University will support you throughout and help you to realise your ambitions.
