Going through Clearing with ease

Hi. My name is Lucy, I study BA (Hons) Business Management (Finance) and I applied to the University of Derby through clearing just before the 2018-2019 academic year. My clearing experience was super easy!

On results day, I just missed out on my first choice University. I decided that actually, if I couldn’t study my course at that particular University, then I wanted to switch courses. The first thing I had to do was get my backup university to take me off the course there. All it took was a quick phone call to that university to explain.

Following this, I spent some time looking at courses online (for the second time) and decided that I wanted to study Business Management (Finance) after reading about the course on the University of Derby website.

I spoke to my Programme Leader over the phone, we talked for no more than twenty minutes about my grades and why I wanted to join Derby Business School and I was offered a place over the phone. After attending one of the Clearing Open Days, I fell in love with Derby’s Kedleston Road Campus. All of the campuses in Derby are architecturally interesting but I especially loved the Atrium at Kedleston Road. My whole clearing experience lasted no longer than a week after results day, including updating UCAS and Student Finance.

The hardest part for me was finding accommodation. The University of Derby has so much of their own accommodation that even late in the year, there’s usually still space in the halls of residence. I decided that I wanted to rent privately so that I had my own space and did not have to share a kitchen or bathroom and it is my only regret.

I missed out on this particular university experience so I’d urge you to at least try it for your first year, even if (like me) you’re not totally sold on the remaining rooms in halls. I have been told that it is worth it for the friendships that you can make by sharing a living space.

I absolutely love my course. The more I learn, the more I am convinced that I made the right choice. My course is broken down into two twelve-week semesters per year and I study three modules per semester, which keeps everything fresh and keeps me entertained. There is no room to get bored and the style of assessment is varied between modules, which challenges me but also makes it fun.

The staff are super supportive, they are always trying to help you succeed and the module leaders are super receptive to feedback to make the modules the best they can be. Choosing Business Management (Finance) at Derby was the best decision I ever made for my education.

For anyone thinking about going through clearing, my advice is- do not panic. No matter what your reason for applying through clearing, you can find the right course for you, just like I did.
