About

I have over 30 years’ experience in education and training, with the last 15 years’ experience being specifically in Higher Education.

My career in education and training started in 1987 when, as an Officer in the Royal Navy I changed occupation from an Aeronautical Engineer to an Education Officer. My role was initially to train engineering officers and artificers and later to manage the training departments.

On leaving the RN in 1997 I spent 5 years as a consultant in the UAE where I helped their military to set up a technical training institute for all branches of their armed forces.

Returning to the UK in 2002 I became a lecturer with Birmingham University concentrating on various aspects of education including teacher training.

Finally, having ‘semi-retired’ in 2012, I joined the University of Derby Online Learning and have been a part time online tutor, author and module leader since then.

Research interests

My main scholarly activity centres on maintaining currency of knowledge in leadership and management principles and practice.

Qualifications

I completed my undergraduate BA Computer Science degree with the Open University in 1985, and went on to achieve a 1st Class Honours Degree in Mathematics with the Open University in 2000.

I then when on to study an MBA in Educational Management at the University of Leicester in 2001, and completed my PGCE (Online and Distance Education) with the Open University in 2005.

Additional interests and activities

I enjoy keeping myself fit, a good book and travelling.
I’ve just returned from a Xmas break in Dubai and Abu Dhabi: dune bashing, dhow cruising, great eating and lovely weather. It’s another one of the benefits of online learning – I had a lovely 3 week break whilst still being able to carry out my tutoring duties - 5000 miles from home !!
