About

I am an Associate Lecturer in Biomedical Science and a Senior Clinical Scientist with over 15 years of experience in the National Health Service (NHS). My current role as an HCPC registered Clinical Scientist involves interpreting complex results of a range of newborn screening, acute and metabolic testing in clinical biochemistry and making judgements on the implications for management and further testing of patients.

Teaching responsibilities

I am involved in teaching modules across the Biomedical Science disciplines and within the speciality of clinical biochemistry.

Professional interests

I am actively involved in service development research/projects (my doctoral thesis is related to pre-analytical errors in clinical biochemistry testing). I am an IBMS External Registration Portfolio Assessor and an STP Equivalence Assessor. I also assist in the training of staff rotating through the clinical biochemistry department and assessing laboratory-based competencies.

I am interested in translational research with a primary focus on achieving good outcomes for the patient. My previous and current work include:

Experience in industry

• I participate in the Duty Biochemists duty rota which involves communicating and discussing complex test results with scientific, medical colleagues and other Health Professionals to assist with the detection of inborn errors of metabolism and options for further testing and management of the neonate
• Assisting in the provision of the analytical/scientific and clinical advisory service for the Newborn Screening Section as a Regional service; advising Regional Paediatricians, General Practitioners, Dieticians, Midwives and Health Visitors
• Responsibility for the reporting and interpretation of the results of screening tests carried out within the laboratory to clinical colleagues within the NHS Trust as well as nationally and making referrals to Clinicians of presumptive positive results from screening tests on neonates
• To inform and discuss follow-up of screen-positive results with Consultants, GPs, Genetics Services and Counselors ensuring timely transmission to parents
• Participation in the Department's Duty Biochemist rota and advising referring Health Professionals on the submission of samples, their suitability and the appropriateness of the tests to be undertaken
• Participation in evaluating new technology and methods as part of the ongoing development of the Newborn Screening Service
• Clinical liaison for Sweat Chloride Testing
• Participate in maintaining and developing various databases within Newborn Screening to facilitate and participate in Annual data collection and submission to UKNSPC
