About

As a lecturer at Derby University, my primary focus is on teaching and supporting students throughout their educational journey. I incorporate real-life case studies into all levels of my teaching, providing students with a practical and applied approach to their learning that is challenging and engaging.

As a Personal Academic Tutor, I aim to provide students with holistic support in all aspects of their studies including their personal, professional, and academic development. My goal is to ensure that students achieve their full potential and are well prepared for employment or further study.

Teaching responsibilities

I teach on undergraduate programmes within the Derby Business School including BA (Hons) Business Management (and its various specialist pathways), Business Studies, Joint Honours Business Management, Joint Honours Human Resource Management and HND/C Business and Management. My main specialist areas are Human Resource Management, Enterprise and Finance.

Research interests

My research interests include student transition from Further Education to Higher Education, Enterprise Education, and embedding Social Enterprise into the curriculum.

Experience in industry

My recent consultancy work is labour market skills analysis to inform the development of a Technical and Vocational Education and Training Framework.

International experience

I have worked overseas in the Caribbean at the University College of the Cayman Islands as Head of the Business Studies Department and then as the Head of Continuing Education. I then moved into financial regulation working for the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority. Here I held two positions: Senior Policy and Research Officer, and Training and Development Specialist. In both roles, I was actively involved with the Cayman Islands Bankers’ Association and was a member of the Educational Sub-Committee writing and delivering bespoke education and training courses for students, public sector employees, and professionals working within the financial services industry.

At the University of Derby, I work closely with our collaborative partners in delivering modules and building best practice into assessment and marking.

Additional interests and activities

I am passionate about enterprise education and participate in the delivery of enterprise-related workshops in local Derby secondary schools as a volunteer Enterprise Adviser. I enjoy giving back to my community and working with charitable organisations and for the period 2017-18 was the Head of Cricket Derby Foundation, the registered charity of Derby County Cricket Club, with responsibility for corporate governance and general administration.

As a former Course Leader for HND Business, I was the external Link Tutor for a FE college, responsible for quality assurance and supporting faculty in the design and delivery of the HND Business curriculum. I am currently a Uniibuddy providing support to students from their initial point of enquiry to enrolment and conversion.
