About

As a senior Lecturer on BSc (Hons) ODP Apprenticeship Degree Programme based at the Kedleston Road campus, I support students with learning, teaching and assessment activities, although I predominately works from home. I am also the Programme leader for the Surgical First Assistant Programme and the Certificate of Credit CPD Anaesthetic programme, respectively. I qualified as an Operating Department Practitioner in 2012 and joined the university in 2020, following a varied career in Perioperative Practice.

Teaching responsibilities

My teaching responsibilities include teaching and assessing across modules of the BSc (Hons) Apprenticeship Degree Programme.

I am module lead for Working and learning in ODP (4OD500), Evidence Based Practice (5OD505), Work Based Project (6OD999), Principles of Anaesthetic Practice (6OD505) Developing Anaesthetic Practice (6OD506) and the Surgical First Assistant (6OD510).

I am also Programme Leader for Surgical First Assistant (OLUBX) and the Credit of Certification CPD for Anaesthetic Practice.

In addition to my teaching and quality assurance responsibilities, I act as a Personal Tutor and Academic Assessor to students, providing support throughout their ODP journey in preparation for qualifying as an Operating Department Practitioner.

Professional interests

I have a professional interest in anaesthetic practice and effective interprofessional working.

I also have a keen interest in supporting students transition to registration.

Research interests

My research interests include writing for publication around areas of medical historical instruments and various surgical specialties. You could say I have a morbid curiosity.

Experience in industry

I joined the university in 2019, as an academic author. Since 2020 I have been employed as an academic. Prior to which I worked as an Operating Department Practitioner within the NHS and Private sectors. I have perioperative practice experience in a wide range of elective and emergency surgical and anaesthetic specialities. These include, General and colorectal surgery, gynaecology, vascular, plastics, dermatology, ophthalmology and ENT to name a few.
