University of Derby Nursing students win global award

12 October 2022

Two Children’s Nursing students at the University of Derby have won a global nursing award.

Third year student Ros Pocklington and Grace Broughton, who is in her second year, received the Zenith Global Healthcare Rising Star award, along with other team members, for their work in curating the Children & Young People Student Nurse Network (CYPStNN).

The awards, which took place on Saturday 8 October in London, celebrate excellence in healthcare, acknowledging fellow healthcare and allied healthcare professionals for their commitment and dedication.

The CYPStNN is an online supportive and educational resource, where Children’s Nursing students can access support and advice from students across the country on the same course.

Both students joined the network to support other Nursing students through their journey and to gain extracurricular leadership experience.

Grace said:

“I am passionate about supporting students through their studies and positively representing my University. That’s why I now demonstrate compassion and commitment to improve quality of lives, prevent illness and promote health for children and young people.”

Ros added:

“I am absolutely delighted to be a representative of Children's Nursing at the University of Derby and an integral part of the CYPStNN team delivering engaging content via social media to fellow student nurses and professionals. Our aim is to provide a platform to promote children and young people's nursing. I am passionate about advocating for children having a choice and a voice, and I am so happy to have won the Rising Stars award. It is fantastic to know we are making such an impact.”

The CYPStNN team also includes students from universities and hospitals around the UK. In addition to winning the Rising Star award, they also received a commendation for Outstanding Team of the Year.

Trudy Cowan, Senior Lecturer in Children’s Nursing at the University of Derby, said:

“We are extremely proud of the ‘small but mighty’ Children’s Nursing cohort that Ros and Grace are part of. Winning this award is testament to the hard work they have put in to the CYPStNN. Their fundamental values of care and compassion are evident in all they do. We also pass on our congratulations to their student nurse colleagues from other universities supporting the network and thank them for keeping children’s nursing high on the agenda.”
