University wins Best Environmental Management award

6 October 2021

The University of Derby’s Student Living team has scooped the ‘Best Environmental Management’ accolade at the 2021 National Student Housing Awards.

In addition to being successful in this category, the University was also shortlisted for five other awards: Best University Halls, Best Student Wellbeing, Best Moving in Experience, Best Booking Experience and Best Value for Money.

Commenting on the success, Steve Ward, Head of Accommodation Services at the University of Derby, said: “We are committed to providing environmentally sustainable practices within halls and encourage our staff and students to help reduce our environmental impact, so to win an award in recognition of this and be shortlisted in so many other categories is a fantastic achievement.

“Last year, the way we delivered our services changed significantly as we adapted to the pandemic, so it is pleasing to see that we continued to deliver high-quality services and an excellent experience for our students.’’

Andy Garton, Operations Manager at the University, added: “The use of LED lighting, the creation and maintenance of greenspaces and promoting general environmental awareness to both students and staff throughout halls are examples of key components put in place that will have contributed to us winning this award.

“All of the products used to clean and maintain halls are eco-friendly and we also work with students to ensure we recycle as much waste as we can. We are proud that students have rated us highly in the category, but they are key contributors to the cause and we, like them, are always striving for more.”

The 2021 National Student Housing Awards are based exclusively on direct feedback from over 30,000 students across 200 universities and colleges. With no written nominations and no ‘expert’ judges, the National Student Housing Awards are uniquely credible and highly prized.

Data for the awards are collected through the Global Student Living Index (UK & Ireland). Registration to participate in the next wave of the Global Student Living Index, running 1st October to 30th November 2021, is now open.
