Rail Research and Innovation Centre

The University of Derby is establishing a Rail Research and Innovation Centre at our Lonsdale House facility in Derby city centre, which also accommodates the Institute for Innovation in Sustainable Engineering, the Data Science Centre and Rail Forum East Midlands.

Our Rail Research and Innovation Centre has received Local Growth Funding from the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership to provide assets for three technical demonstrators. These will be available to support collaborative research and innovation projects specifically linked to the local Rail Supply Chain. These demonstrators will be installed and commissioned by summer 2019 and will comprise the following:

Depending on the scale of the project, participating companies may need to co-invest into their research project. Wherever possible the University of Derby will align support which can be obtained through available funded rail projects and grants for access to equipment, consumables and Technical Advisor time. Additional laboratory equipment for materials testing, additive manufacture and prototyping is also accessible through funded projects.

Prior Information Notice:

We also expect to announce imminently an exciting scheme that will enable SMEs to access postgraduate, graduate and undergraduate support for company-led research and innovation projects. Support opportunities will range from 80 hours through to 3 years. Opportunities will be ring-fenced for rail sector SMEs and we encourage interested companies to signal their interest using the link above.

We are seeking expressions of interest for research projects from the Rail Forum East Midlands membership. Please register your details below:
