About

I am a registered nurse in adult and children’s nursing and spent many years working clinically in a variety of children’s hospital settings and in a children’s hospice.

I have always enjoyed supporting other peoples learning and was a mentor, then educator and finally became a lecturer in 2003. Since then I have focused my teaching, research and activities into mentoring for nursing, practice education and support systems for placements. I have led curricula development for large nursing programmes, been a course director for a PG Certificate in Practice Teaching and developed my expertise in the area of mentorship and practice education in nursing.

Teaching responsibilities

My role within the School of Nursing and Professional Practice supports the Mentorship in Practice module and leads the implementation of new roles for supervising nursing students and assessment in practice.

My role at UDOL (University of Derby Online Learning) is module lead for the Mentorship in Practice modules and developing online resources for supervisors and assessors of nursing students in practice, and the development of new healthcare education modules.

Professional interests

I am interested in all aspects of practice-based learning and assessment for healthcare

Research interests

My research area is in Mentorship. My doctoral thesis, completed in 2017, evaluated the role of the sign-off mentor in Nursing.
