I am a Lecturer in Policing, delivering on the BA (Hons) Professional Policing degree course. This course is accredited by the College of Policing and is one of the new entry routes into a career in policing.

Teaching responsibilities

Together with my colleagues, I teach a range of modules that cover all aspects of policing. Modules include content on the history and formation of the modern police service, legislation, investigation, community policing and much more.

I also organise guest speakers and visits to police establishments to enhance the learning experience for students.

Professional interests

As a former Public Order Tactical Advisor, I am very interested in the fields of Crowd Dynamics and Crowd Psychology, particularly in relation to protest and disorder.

Experience in industry

I retired from West Midlands Police in 2018, after a career in policing that started when I joined Leicestershire Constabulary in 1993. I was fortunate to have a wide range of roles and opportunities during my service, including six years as a detective.

I was a Custody Sergeant, Operations Planning Sergeant and Licensing Sergeant for the borough of Walsall. I was deployed as a Public Order officer during the riots of 2011 and policed London during the 2012 Olympic Games.

In the last years of my service, I managed the Midland Region Tactical Training Centre, where I supervised the delivery of a range of training courses, including Public Order, Command courses, Taser, CBRN training and Disaster Victim Identification to name but a few.

I remained operational, being deployed as a Commander and Tactical Advisor on a range of high-profile events and contentious football fixtures. One of my last deployments was to Cliveden, to take part in the police operation to protect Meghan Markle before her marriage to Prince Harry.

I use my policing knowledge and experience to bring operational context to my lectures.
