nasen Universal SEND Services: Action Research & Lesson Study Project

Earlier this year, the National Association for Special Educational Needs (nasen) launched the new ‘Universal SEND Services’ programme. Funded by the Department for Education and running from now until 2025, this important work includes various elements, including a school, college/FE Action Research and Lesson Study project.

Led by the University of Derby Inclusion and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (ISEND) Research Cluster, this Action Research and Lesson Study project aims to support schools, colleges/FE staff to develop their own bespoke small-scale research projects that focus on inclusion and removing barriers to achievement for children and young people with SEND.

Divided into two strands, over the next three years, this project will support the development of, 50 new Lesson Study projects, and 75 new Action Research projects.

  • Learn how to develop an ethical, bespoke ISEND research project which addresses an area of development identified as relevant and pertinent to their setting
  • Engage in 6 free, DfE funded, twilight CPD sessions which support participants step-by-step through each stage of leading a research project
  • Gain support from experienced researchers (who are also qualified teachers) in the field of ISEND
  • Gain support from a small network of other settings
  • Receive a £300 honorarium for the production of dissemination materials
  • As a marker of esteem, feature on a website that will support other settings to develop their own ISEND practitioner research projects
