The Times’ Chief Football Correspondent Oliver Kay visited the University of Derby this week (January 16) to discuss his career and knowledge of the industry with aspiring football journalism students.

Talking to students about his career and experience, Oliver said: “The football journalism industry is an extremely competitive and unpredictable sector. You’re going to have to stand out to potential employers as being someone worth ‘taking a chance’ on.

“As a journalist, you're looking for answers, so be prepared to ask questions rather than to expect the information to come looking for you.”

During his talk, Oliver praised the brand new Football Journalism course at the University of Derby. He said: “There wasn’t a course like this when I was starting out. It’s brilliant to see new journalists coming through.”

Football Journalism student Molly Jennens commented on the visit: “This is a fantastic opportunity to have while studying. To hear real life experiences of the working environment that we all want to go in is brilliant. Oliver’s advice about the industry was invaluable.”

Peter Lansley, Senior Lecturer in Football Journalism at the University of Derby said: “Oliver’s visit formed part of a series of guest lectures from high-profile industry professionals who have visited the University to inspire and engage our students.

“The guest speakers have included: England manager, Gareth Southgate; The Times’ Chief Football Writer, Henry Winter; sport presenter and journalist, Jacqui Oatley and international professional footballer Ellen White. Our first-year undergraduates have had an enriching start to the country's first dedicated Football Journalism degree. We are most grateful to the visitors for their time and insight.”
