As mad as a hatter – University hosts second STEMpunk Extravaganza

STEMPunk 504x257 "It’s a great opportunity to demonstrate how stimulating and exciting science, technology, engineering and math can be." Bev Reardon, Schools and Colleges Liaison Tutor for the University of Derby

Racing car simulators, the dodo, disappearing cats and Lego hermit crabs will be among the vibrant attractions at a University of Derby science exhibition.

The University will host its second ‘STEMpunk Extravaganza’ on March 17, from 5-9pm, at its Kedleston Road site in Derby.

The extravaganza aims to increase awareness of science, technology, engineering and maths subjects (STEM) amongst children by combining them with the science fiction genre ‘steampunk’, where fantastic technology is mixed with Victorian-era characters, to make learning more stimulating and enjoyable.

This year there will be an Alice in Wonderland theme throughout, including a Chemis-Tea party where various liquids will be bubbling away and a racing car simulator where the rider will be surrounded by screens for the ultimate ride-in experience.

There will be plenty to keep young minds engaged with other activities such as 3D doodle pens that heat plastic to form words as you write, an interactive lighting rig, and an anatomically correct reconstruction of a dodo skeleton.

Bev Reardon, Schools and Colleges Liaison Tutor for the University, and joint organiser of the event said: “STEMpunk Extravaganza will be an interactive feast, aimed at engaging young people’s interest in STEM subjects, which are vital for the UK economy. It’s a great opportunity to demonstrate how stimulating and exciting science, technology, engineering and math can be. The Alice in Wonderland theme this year will be full of visual illusions and give a real insight into the future of STEM subjects.”

The free event is open to children aged 5 upwards and their families.
