About the conference

As a part of their degree, second-year Literature and History students take part in an annual public conference, where they present a series of papers based around a central theme.

In 2024 the theme is Power, Authority and Subversion. The papers cover a wide range of topics, including representations of and challenges to power in Renaissance England, the consequences of rebellions in Japan, China and India, and the theme of subversion in literary works, including texts by William S. Burroughs, N. Scott Momaday and Sayaka Murata.

Who is the conference for?

Everyone is very welcome to join us for a day of exciting and engaging presentations which explore how power, authority and subversion have shaped culture and society.

If you have any questions about the day please contact the conference organisers, Dr Ruth Larsen, Dr Robin Sims and Professor Ian Whitehead.
